One of the most frequent questions I get when I reveal our family's homeschooling status is, "Well, do you use a curriculum?" The other I think presents a variation on a similar theme: "So, have you taught before?"
I'm sorry (most of the time), but I find both questions pretty annoying.
Do you use a curriculum
-why its annoying (handing off responsibilities...(or having it taken away from you)
-why it (can be) damaging (inflexibility, above)
-college educatedness (is it REALLY for everyone, or is learning for life more for everyone and should be the more desirable goal--don't learn just in the box)
-spend time around folks who teach (they are professionals, but like other professionals, their knowledge base is not absolute, doctors utilizing best midwifery, acupuncture/eastern medicine practices, herbal remedies, etc)
what do you do then?
-eclectic style (use what works)
-children centered/focused (not keeping class quiet, getting ready for conferences, inflating grades... tailoring studies to what they want to learn and what lessons you want them to learn...some of which fall far outside of any box school textbook (how to be a great friend, a great sibling, a creative artist, a dancer, a great sport, how to be confident in your relationships, how to express your sexuality in healthy positive manners, etc)
-curriculum (yes to the extent they are helpful)
-experience (YAYA conference)
Reverence for ourselves and our family
